Leave It to Beaver's Barbara Billingsley Loved Being America's Mom

They were the Modern Family of their time, back when cars sported tailfins, Americans raced the Russians to the moon and everybody liked Ike.

They were the Cleavers, delivering a bit of sanitized Americana every week on the TV sitcom Leave It to Beaver: stalwart dad Ward, hormonal older brother Wally, trouble-prone kid brother Theodore (better known as "the Beaver," for his oversized front teeth), and the always perfectly coiffed, calm and collected mother, June, played by actress Barbara Billingsley.

Billingsley, 94, died early Saturday morning at her home in Santa Monica, Calif., after a long illness.

"Barbara was a patient advisor and teacher. She helped me along this challenging journey through life by showing me the importance of manners and respect for others," Jerry Mathers, 62, who played the Beaver from 1957-63, said in a statement. "She will be missed by all of her family, friends, fans and, most especially, by me."

"She was as happy as a lark being recognized as America's mom," Tony Dow, 65, who played Wally, told . "She had a terrific life and had a wonderful impact on everybody she knew, and even people she didn't know."

Like a Death in the Family

Though Beaver became an iconic show whose reruns on cable networks also proved popular to subsequent generations, to Baby Boomers, Billingsley's death is like losing a close relative. Indeed, her June Cleaver was the last of a line idealized TV moms, one prettier than the next: Harriet Nelson, of The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet; Jane Wyatt's Margaret Anderson, of Father Knows Best; and Donna Reed's Donna Stone, of The Donna Reed Show.

Told from the boys' point of view, Leave It to Beaver made the jokes take a backseat to the moral lessons of the day. Like the later The Andy Griffith Show, what Leave It to Beaver provided was comfort – which is why Billingley's casting in the 1980 movie spoof Airplane! as the passenger who spoke jive was so jolting – and hysterical.

Born Barbara Lillian Combes in Los Angeles, Billingsley had been a model in New York before being signed as an MGM contract player. She appeared on various TV shows ranging from dramas to comedies before the Cleaver clan gathered on CBS in 1957. The following year the show moved to ABC, where it remained until the end of its run.

Billingsley was married three times, and her first husband, restaurateur Glenn Billingsley, was a nephew of Sherman Billingsley, who owned New York's famed Stork Club. Her other husbands, both of whom predeceased her, were director Roy Kelino and Dr. William Mortenson.

Glenn and Barbara Billingsley, who divorced in 1947, had two sons, Drew and Glenn, Jr., who survive her, as do four grandchildren – as well as the untold millions who will always envision her in the kitchen, wearing apron and pearls, and saying, "Ward, I'm worried about the Beaver."

Cami yangınında Kur'an sayfalarına hiç bir şey olmadı

Suudi Arabistan'da bir camide çıkan dev yangında caminin büyük zarar görmesine rağmen içerideki Kur'an-ı Kerim nüshalarına hiç bir şey olmadığı bildir

Suudi Arabistan'da bir camide çıkan dev yangında caminin büyük zarar görmesine rağmen içerideki Kur'an-ı Kerim nüshalarına hiç bir şey olmadığı bildirildi. Yerel gazetelerde çıkan haberlere göre ülkenin doğu kesiminde yer alan İhsa bölgesinde sabahın erken saatlerinde cami içerisinde yangın başladı. İtfaiye ekipleri yangının nasıl başladığına dair henüz kesin bir neticeye ulaşamadı.

Bunun yanı sıra itfaiyeciler, tüm caminin, içerideki mobilya, ses sistemleri ve diğer eşyaların kullanılamaz hale geldiği ve saatler süren yangında sadece Kur'an-ı Kerim nüshalarının zarar görmemesi karşısında şaşkınlığa uğradı.

El Yevm gazetesine göre sivil savunma yetkilileri, cami imamı ve etrafta oturan halk, yangının nasıl başladığına dair net bilgi veremedi. Yangında asıl ilginç hadisenin camideki tüm eşyaların tamamen yanmasına rağmen Kur'an nüshalarına ateşin dokunmaması olduğu ifade edildi.

conspiracy theory jesse ventura

Conspiracy theories can go in any number of directions. They’re often unsubstantiated, built on shoddy logic, and birthed from the shadows of the most suspicious imagination.

A few weeks back, new footage following the collapse of the Twin Towers was released, and one video in particular had describing an explosion that they heard in the basement of one of the towers preceding its collapse. This lends new support to all sorts of conspiracies about the attacks, many of which allege that the US government was involved.

It’s unsettling to say the very least. And Jesse Ventura has now thrown his hat into the ring concerning the . During a recent , he stood firm on his views that there were indeed explosions in the basement of the Twin Towers, and that they didn’t collapse, but exploded.

Ventura claims that the attacks were used as an incentive to enter into Iraq. He asserts that just like with the Vietnam war and the hoax with the Gulf of Tonkin Incident, the 9/11 were perpetrated as a justification for war.

It’s a viewpoint most of us are loath to consider, but the more evidence released, the less crazy Ventura starts to sound. Heres the video:

TJ Lavin’s crash video shows the whole accident

After the incident, Lavin was rushed in nearby hospital and is currently at critical state in a medically induced coma. In addition, the eight seconds crash video can now be seen anywhere in the Internet. Moreover, the crash happened at the event at Las Vegas.

Moreover, Lavin was moved to a local hospital and according to initial news reports; he seems to signify the he will make a complete recovery after the incident.

On the other hand, Pete Thomas Outdoors reported that Lavin, 33, was soaring high over a dirt ramp during the qualifying rounds on Thrsday night and was trying a hard maneuver that needed becoming momentarily unseated from his bicycle.

Pete Thomas Outdoors also said that Lavin failed to get his feet back on the bicycle’s pedals before landing on the downhill, became separated from the bicycle simply before impact and was tapped comatose.

Furthermore, Lavin, a pure native in Las Vegas, was moved to University Medical Center and also was stated to have undergone broken right wrist and broken ribs. A spokeswoman in the hospital will not verify the damages of Lavin nor modify on his state when reached Friday morning, but said it stayed critical.

In addition to the Dew Tour Championship, Lavin is recognized as a past X-Games champion as well as a host of MTV’s Real World/Road Rules Challenge.

sweetest day

Sweetest Day marked today in USA
Sweetest Day is an observance celebrated primarily in the Great Lake region, and parts of the Northeast United States on the third Saturday in October.

Once known as a day to spread love and cheer to the unfortunate, this popular holiday in the northern U.S. is now known as a day to show affection to the ones in your life whom you like. It is described by Retail Confectioners International as an "occasion which offers all of us an opportunity to remember not only the sick, aged and orphaned, but also friends, relatives and associates whose helpfulness and kindness we have enjoyed."

Sweetest Day has also been referred to as a "concocted promotion created by the candy industry solely to increase sales of sweets.

For the third time in 3 years, West Orange - Cove CISD has earned a Property Casualty Alliance of Texas (PCAT) dividend.

Kerry Sims, Executive Vice President and Chief Operation Officer of North American Solutions made the $82,579.87 presentation to WOCCISD Interim Superintendent Bill Conway.

Previous presentations to West Orange – Cove CISD have been in the amount of $28,440.61 in 2008; and in the amount of $19,160.43 in 2009.

Dividends result from lower than normal claims.

PCAT is a Texas interlocal governmental risk program representing 104 school districts and over $27 million in annual contributions.

“Property/casualty insurance is a significant annual recurring expense for school districts, so it makes sense to embrace a long-term strategy to achieve budget stability and the lowest long-term cost. Dividends are just one of the many ways in which PCAT helps schools reduce their ultimate insurance costs,” said Jack Melton, CEO of North American Solutions, the program administrator for PCAT.

CHRIS CUOMO WITH A PROVACATIVE LOOK AT KIDS AND BULLYING ON "20/20"

And: You Live With What?

A Special Edition of "20/20" Airs Friday, October 15, 9 pm ET on ABC

According to The National Education Association, 160,000 kids won't go to school on any given day for fear of being bullied. Whether the child is gay, overweight, too pretty or just plain different, bullying has become an epidemic in this country, and more kids are tragically choosing to take their own lives because they can't take it anymore. Are schools not doing enough, or are parents to blame? Chris Cuomo talks to families, kids, educators and lawmakers to find out what's going on. He talks to the bullied and confronts the bullies. "20/20" also takes viewers inside the Alliance School - a no-hate, no-bully zone in Milwaukee, WI, the only middle school of its kind in the United States. "20/20" airs FRIDAY, OCTOBER 15 (9:00-10:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.

Plus: You live with what? Imagine living with a one-ton bison or sharing a home with the world's largest living rodent, the capybara. ABC News Correspondent John Berman reports on a surprising tale of two giant animals who are beloved family members, despite the fact that one, a one-ton bison named Wildthing, could kill, and the other, a capybara named Caplin Rous - the world's largest rodent at 100 pounds - has razor sharp teeth. Wildthing has been best man - or in his case "best bison" - at his owners' RC and Sherron Bridges wedding vow renewals and is even allowed to come inside the family home for hours at a time (Wildthing is better behaved inside the house than the cowboy's own children, according to RC). Capybara Caplin chirps like a bird when he's happy and even sleeps under the covers in his owner Melanie's bed. Caplin's life is well-documented: he has more than 3,500 Twitter followers and a Facebook page to boot. Fans around the world love this crazy-looking giant rodent but don't get on Caplin's bad side - he holds a grudge!

"20/20" is anchored by Elizabeth Vargas and Chris Cuomo. David Sloan is executive producer.

Justin Bieber – Rapping Alter Ego

If being Usher’s protege didn’t give Justin Bieber enough swagger, this just-released video of the teen singing sensation rapping should do the trick.

Bieber dropped some serious news on his fans on Wednesday when he introduced his 5,716,387 (and growing by the minute)

Twitter followers to his rapping alter ego, Shawty Mane.

“Speaking in tongues freestyle
who knew i could rap lol
my alter ego rap name is Shawty Mane … hah,” Bieber wrote.

In true rap-star fashion, Bieber opts for the age-old practice of taking shots at someone else (also known as “beef”) in verse. In this case, Bieber’s victim is Tom Brady, who was recently mocked for sporting a Bieber-esque hairstyle. “Hello Mr. Brady / Tell him to leave his hair to the guy who sings ‘Baby,’” Bieber raps as he smooths down his iconic ‘do.

Last week the website that culls online mega craft show for the worst handmade goods -- "Handmade? It looks like you made it with your feet." -- featured an art photo they dubbed "Shit Sandwich."

The artist, unimpressed with a sandwich she'd ordered, reconstructed her leftovers, took a photo that would be sub-par by Urbanspoon standards, tacked on a loquacious description and is trying to sell it.

Is the mustache fad over yet? The only thing that would make this more hip would be if it were bacon-flavored. Don't worry -- it's not.

And what does "I moustache you" mean? That I can cram your whole pushbroom facial hair into my mouth and suck it off a stick? OK, so there's probably a market for that.

vision for many months afterwards, making him a liability as a pitcher. Galesburg soon sold the afflicted player to the Indianapolis Indians, but this relationship ended almost before it began when the vision-challenged pitcher accidentally broke three of the manager's ribs with his first pitch. He then was sold to the Syracuse Chiefs, but by the time the season began, Alexander's vision was clear. In that 1910 season, Alexander had twenty-nine wins along with fifteen shutouts for the Chiefs.

Grover Cleveland "Old Pete" Alexander (February 26, 1887 – November 4, 1950) was an American professional baseball pitcher. He played in Major League Baseball for the Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs, and St. Louis Cardinals. He was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1938.

Many baseball players today are hoping to get on the path on the Alexander. He is the one of the legends of the baseball and the same with Ronald Reagan .

His most famous victim was Tony Lazzeri of the Yankees. In the seventh inning of the final game of the 1926 WS, with the Cardinals ahead 3-2, the Yankees had two out and the bases loaded. Alexander, who'd won two games, including a complete game the day before, relieved for St. Louis. On four knee-high pitches, he struck out Lazzeri, then pitched two more hitless innings to wrap up the World Championship.

Most people think of him from his days fronting Twisted Sister, which only increase the number of music was his hair. WASHINGTON (AP) -Rookie sensation Stephen Strasburg was diagnosed with inflammation in his pitching shoulder after being scratched from his scheduled start for the Washington Nationals because he had problems warming up his prized and powerful right arm.

Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo said Strasburg had "stiffness and discomfort'' in his right shoulder, but an MRI and X-ray show no structural damage.

The Nationals did not make Strasburg available for comment, saying he went for tests immediately after he encountered trouble. Rizzo said Strasburg is day to day and he's not certain when the righty will pitch next.

PRO FOOTBALL

NEW YORK (AP) - The NFL will distribute a new poster to teams that warns of the dangers from concussions in much harsher language than the league had previously used.

Traumatic brain injury "may lead to problems with memory and communication, personality changes, as well as depression and the early onset of dementia,'' the document reads.

The acknowledgment of such risks is a significant change from a pamphlet previously distributed to players, starting in 2007.

Dr. Richard Ellenbogen, co-chairman of the NFL committee that studies concussions, said that recent research influenced the changes in wording.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Jack Tatum, the Pro Bowl safety for the Oakland Raiders best known for his crushing hit that paralyzed Darryl Stingley in an NFL preseason game in 1978, has died. He was 61.

Nicknamed "The Assassin,'' Tatum, died of a heart attack in an Oakland hospital, according to friend and former Ohio State teammate John Hicks. Hicks said Tatum had diabetes the past several years, and had lost his left leg because of circulation problems.

After starring for Ohio State under coach Woody Hayes, Tatum was drafted in the first round by the Raiders in 1971. In nine seasons with the Raiders, Tatum started 106 of 120 games with 30 interceptions and helped Oakland win the 1976 Super Bowl. He played his final season with the Houston Oilers in 1980.

AUTO RACING

MILWAUKEE (AP) - NASCAR team owner Jack Roush was in serious but stable condition after walking away from a plane crash in Wisconsin on Tuesday night.

"There are injuries. Possible surgery,'' Roush Fenway Racing president Geoff Smith said in a text message to The Associated Press. "But he walked out of the plane.''

Smith confirmed that the plane belonged to Roush, and he was flying it. Smith said Roush's injuries include facial lacerations.

Roush, an aviation buff, was attending the Experimental Aircraft Association's annual AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wis., this week. According to a statement from the team, Roush was landing his plane when the accident occurred.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

NEW YORK (AP) - Say goodbye to the old Pac-10. The league has a new logo, a new more aggressive attitude and two new members scheduled to arrive in 2011. And when Colorado and Utah officially join, the conference will also have a new name.

The Pac-12 is on its way, commissioner Larry Scott announced at a news conference at a Manhattan hotel.

In June, Scott nearly turned the Pac-10 into the Pac-16 - and in the process nearly killed the Big 12. But Texas, Oklahoma and three other Big 12 teams decided to stay put and Scott had to settle for adding Colorado and Utah.

CYCLING

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Federal prosecutors investigating cheating in professional cycling have subpoenaed documents from a 2004 case in which a Texas company tried to prove Lance Armstrong used performance enhancing drugs.

Jeffrey Tillotson, the attorney who handled the case for Dallas-based SCA Promotions Inc., said that his office will send the documents to federal prosecutors in Los Angeles.

The records include depositions from former Tour de France winner Greg LeMond, former Armstrong teammate Frankie Andreu and his wife, and testimony from Armstrong and his business associates. The Wall Street Journal first reported the subpoena Tuesday.

SOCCER

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) - Diego Maradona is out as Argentina's soccer coach.

The Argentine Football Association said it would not renew his contract. Maradona had spent an erratic 21 months in charge of a national team that was eliminated in the World Cup quarterfinals with a 4-0 loss to Germany.

The federation had offered Maradona a four-year contract to continue through the 2014 World Cup. But Maradona said he would stay only if his entire staff remained.

That was unacceptable to Argentine Football Association president Julio Grondona. He had asked for several assistants to be replaced. One of them is Maradona's close friend Alejandro Mancuso. The federation's executive committee sided with Grondona.

ATHLETICS

TALLINN, Estonia (AP) - Organizers say former Olympic champion Justin Gatlin will make his comeback from a four-year doping ban at the Bigbank Kuldliiga meet in Estonia on Aug. 3.

Spokesman Taavi Esperk said the American sprinter will run in the 100 meters at the meet in the northeastern town of Rakvere, about 62 miles from Tallinn.

Gatlin is also reportedly set to race at the Ergo Games in Tallinn on Aug. 8.

Gatlin won gold in the 100 at the 2004 Athens Olympics and in the 100 and 200 at the 2005 world championships.

He had tied the 100 world record of 9.77 seconds, a mark that came weeks after a positive test in April 2006 for excessive testosterone and which has since been erased

New York Islanders left wing Matt Moulson agreed to a one-year contract worth $2.45 million. . . . The Edmonton Oilers re-signed center Gilbert Brule. . . . The Phoenix Coyotes signed free-agent center Bracken Kearns to a one-year contract. . . . The Kings signed left wing Alexei Ponikarovsky.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Rick Pitino's lawyer said the Louisville basketball coach might testify Wednesday in the case of a woman accused of trying to extort him. Attorney Steve Pence said Pitino's testimony could last half a day in the case of Karen Cunagin Sypher, 50, who is accused of demanding more than $10 million.

Sypher's attorney, James Earhart, has said Pitino pulled strings and used his influence to cover up the rape of his client. Police found no evidence to back her claim of rape, and the case was dismissed.

A spokesman for the West Virginia University basketball team says further testing has revealed that coach Bob Huggins broke seven ribs - not four - in a hotel room fall. Huggins injured himself in a fall in his Las Vegas hotel room Friday while on a recruiting trip.

Say goodbye to the old Pac-10. When Colorado and Utah officially join, the conference will have a new name: the Pac-12.

NBA: Houston Rockets center Yao Ming is considering quitting basketball if he doesn't fully recover from a lingering foot injury. In comments to the official Xinhua News Agency, Yao, who missed last season following foot surgery, sounded pessimistic. "The chance is very small," said Yao, who turns 30 in September.

NASCAR: Roush Fenway Racing owner and aviation buff Jack Roush walked away from a Beechcraft Premier business jet that crashed during landing at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh, Wis. The National Transportation Safety Board said Roush, who was piloting the jet, and a passenger, Brenda Strickland of Plymouth, Mich., were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

SOCCER: Diego Maradona is out as Argentina's soccer coach, his stay ending after nearly two years on the job and a humiliating exit in the World Cup quarterfinals earlier this month.

Point guard Steve Blake says he has deal to join Los Angeles Lakers

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Steve Blake says he has agreed to a contract with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Blake told Portland radio station 95.5 FM on Friday that he has a four-year deal with the two-time defending champions, who might lose starting point guard Derek Fisher in free agency.

NBA teams can't sign players until next week.

The veteran point guard could replace the 35-year-old Fisher, who won his fifth title with the Lakers last month but is an unrestricted free agent. Fisher said he would like to return to the Lakers, but could be looking for a bigger deal than the team could offer.

Blake, a seven-year veteran, played for Portland and the Clippers last season
